Serving is the heart of our ministry - it is what living out the faith is all about. Central to our serving is how we serve in our daily lives – our jobs, our families, and our community. But we also serve through the various specific ministries of the congregation that serve the community at large. Following are some of the ministries the congregation is involved in which serve the Lansing community.
Habitat for Humanity – For several years the congregation has partnered with other congregations in the Lansing area to build Habitat for Humanity houses for low income families. Building skills are helpful but not required to be involved. Besides skilled labor, people are needed to pray for the build, pound nails, paint, clean the build site, and provide lunch for the workers. It is a wonderful and fun way to serve.
Northwest Lansing Lutheran Food Bank – Every Monday from noon to 3 PM, a food bank operates at church. Volunteers fill food orders sent that are received. Over 100 people are fed each month with almost half of those being children. Canned food drives are held during the year to help keep the food bank stocked.
Advent House – On the fifth Sunday of the month (4 months a year) our congregation serves a lunch meal at Advent House to adults and families who are hungry and needy. People are needed to help prepare and serve the meal. This is a very important and needed ministry and an answer to God’s call to feed the hungry.
Kids Hope USA – St. Stephen has partnered with Kids Hope USA and our neighborhood elementary school, Cumberland, to provide a wonderful ministry of mentoring children. Each mentor is paired with one student and spends on hour a week throughout the school year, mentoring, befriending, and tutoring them. Each mentor/student pair also has a prayer partner who prays regularly for them. This is a very rewarding and fulfilling way to serve.
Christian Services – For years St. Stephen has partnered with Christian Services to coordinate various ministries with other churches in the Lansing area. Together we are a powerful example of the love of Jesus Christ at work in the world.
Thanksgiving and Easter Baskets - We partner with Christian Services in order to identify families in need in the neighborhood. We then provide about 25 Thanksgiving food baskets and 10 Easter baskets so that these families will not be without food on these holidays.
